Chapter Eleven

GEORGE BLACK’S FUNERAL was well attended, just as I thought it would be. It seemed like most of the business owners had made it. Nina had asked us to close the jewelry store and put a sign on the front letting people know that was where we were today. It was a good idea. This meant that both Elizabeth and Kelly could attend, as well as my family. My dad had taken the day off from work, and he came with Mom to support Nina and her family.

Mom and Dad sat in the pew in front of us at the First Baptist Church, while Christy and her boyfriend, Devon, sat next to me and Ethan. Amanda and her husband Brian sat on the other side of Ethan.

The front pew was filled with George’s family, which included seven grandchildren. I hadn’t realized that he and Nina had that many grandchildren. As I looked over the crowd, I saw a lot of familiar faces. When you own a business in a small town, everyone knows you, and it didn’t surprise me that so many people had shown up, even though George was an introvert who rarely ventured outside of his home or business.

On the far side of the sanctuary Elizabeth sat rigidly in the pew. She appeared to be alone as she sat facing forward and didn’t talk to anyone. Kelly was on the opposite side of the sanctuary. If it were me and any of our employees, we would have sat together. I wondered if Kelly had chosen not to sit with her because she was so bossy at work.

Ethan took my hand and squeezed it. He smiled as he leaned over. “You don’t have to figure out who killed him. That’s my job.”

I shook my head, smiling. “I’m just looking over the crowd while we wait for the service to begin.”

“Sure.”

I shook my head. There was little chance I was going to stop thinking about who might be the killer at this point in my life. I had been doing it for too long.

My dad turned to us. “A lot of people turned out today.”

I nodded. “I’m glad. For his family’s sake.”

“Yeah, I’m sure it will make them feel a little better,” Christy said.

He nodded and turned forward again. Sighing, I laid my head on Ethan’s arm. I hated funerals. Especially when it was for someone who wasn’t ready to go yet. Unfortunately, that wasn’t uncommon, but I didn’t have to be happy about it.

The pastor took the podium, and I sat up.
